Bone surgery

Bone surgery

Revolution in the operating room: The Swiss medical robotics company.

Advanced Osteotomy Tools, based in Basel, is reinventing bone surgery. CARLO®, the world's first laser osteotome approved for clinical use, cuts bone with extraordinary precision in any desired geometry. Schumacher supplies high-performance electrical components for this purpose.

Due to mechanical instruments, bone surgery has so far been limited to straight cuts or round holes. Laser cutting ends this limitation and enables unlimited patient-specific cutting geometries - up to puzzle-like cuts that fit together perfectly. These interlocking cutting geometries are a milestone for the primary stability of osteosyntheses and increase the bone-on-bone contact area for optimal healing.

We are currently supporting AOT in enabling the bone lasers to also cut skin. The bone then does not have to be exposed for laser treatment. This accelerates the healing process and leads to less scar tissue. Technically, this means that for two tissue structures, two laser beams of different wavelengths must be placed next to each other, which then pulse in unison. The technical solution for this is already on the way.
